Time for PT

April 07, 2025 - less than a minute read

Perhaps the most infuriating aspect of my ACL tear is the time that PT seems to require.

Each day, in no particular order, I must complete:

  • 90 minutes of leg immobilization with a brace

  • 20 minutes of NMES treatment

  • 10-20 minutes of prone knee extension hangs

  • 100 straight leg raises

  • 100 ankle pumps

  • 30 supine heel slides

  • 30 clamshells

  • 30 long sitting quad sets

  • Over 90 various alternative leg raises

All in all, I might spend over 2 hours each day just devoted to my physical therapy. These are just the ones needed before surgery. After the big day, I will be subjected to 5 daily 15-minute sessions on an exercise bike. I’ll also need to drive back and forth to my 3 weekly PT sessions. Amortized over the week, that comes to an additional 2 hours a day. Finally, I will also need to ice my knee at least 20 minutes every 2 hours.

All in all, PT and recovery will take 4 to 5 hours every day!

How does anyone have the time.
